Who Are We?

The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is a science-based, charitable body that provides information, expertise and guidance in the recognition, control and management of workplace health risks.

BOHS was founded in 1953: it is the only professional society representing qualified occupational hygienists in the UK, and has over 1800 members in 57countries. BOHS is the only occupational hygiene organisation to be awarded a Royal Charter: this was granted in April 2013 in recognition of BOHS’ unique and pre-eminent role as the leading authority in occupational disease prevention.

What is Occupational Hygiene?

Occupational hygiene is the scientific discipline that protects people against the wide range of health risks that can arise from potential hazards in the workplace.  In short, the job of an occupational hygienist is to identify and control these hazards, in order to protect workers from serious and even fatal illnesses: cancer; asthma; dermatitis; hearing loss; and many other diseases can all be caused by hazards in the workplace.  Examples of workplace hazards include: chemicals; dusts; fumes; noise; vibration; and extreme temperatures.

What Do We Do?

BOHS is the Chartered Society for Worker Health Protection, and as such believes in ‘A Healthy Working Environment for Everyone’.

We aim to protect the health of workers by preventing ill health in the workplace, by promoting the science and practice of occupational hygiene via:

Via campaigns and initiatives, BOHS collaborates with other stakeholders in the field of health and safety to highlight risks, and raise awareness of the causes of occupational diseases - and how workers should be protected. Through this, we can help influence national and international policy and practice.

Breathe Freely is BOHS' initiative which aims to reduce the incidence of occupational lung disease in the construction industry. BOHS is working on this in partnership with HSE, Mace, Land Securities and Constructing Better Health. Please visit the Breathe Freely website to find out how you can get involved.
