BOHS and FOH are launching the Register of Occupational Hygiene Professionals accredited by the Professional Standards Authority

The British Occupational Hygiene Society and the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene  have launched the Register of Occupational Hygiene Professionals, accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care, the UK’s regulator of registered health professionals.

The accreditation recognizes the Society’s commitment to the highest standards in professional practice in the field of Occupational Hygiene. Occupational Hygiene is the first of the occupational health professions to have obtained accreditation.

The Register, which is free to access, meets a statutory requirement and is maintained in the public interest to provide a list of competent professionals in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Employers should only use such competent professionals when seeking to prevent harmful exposures in the workplace that may result in ill health, or when wishing to obtain Occupational Hygiene advise and expertise. The Register also provides a list of professionals deemed competent to provide assessment of more complex Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems.

Duty holders, service users, and employers, should choose an Occupational Hygiene Professional from the Register,  which is assured by the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene and the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.

FOH members, as well as non-Faculty practitioners, able to demonstrate they meet the Registration requirements- commitment to professional standards, a complaints and ethics process and a duty to maintain current and relevant professional knowledge- are eligible to be included on the Register.

The Accredited Register grants the right to Qualified Occupational Hygienists and Occupational Hygiene Technicians to proudly display the PSA Accredited Registers Quality Mark, symbolizing adherence to professional and ethical standards, and further elevating the stature of Occupational Hygiene as a profession.

Sarah Leeson, Registrar of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene said:

“I feel extremely proud that the Register has obtained the PSA accreditation. This achievement reflects all the preparation work carried out by the FOH committee and Head Office over the past few years.  Establishing a Register of Occupational Hygiene Professionals and the subsequent accreditation is a significant step forward in improving the transparency of those competent to practice Occupational Hygiene and improving the quality of Occupational Hygiene provision, with the end goal of reducing the risk of worker ill health”.

BOHS encourages and endorses the selection of practitioners who are registered with an Accredited Register, as recommended by the Professional Standards Authority.
