At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. We are the independent regulator for occupational health and safety in Great Britain, and our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, provide specialist products and services, and produce crucial research and statistics.

Our Energy Division regulates the UK's Offshore Oil and Gas industry, pipelines, mines, diving and renewable power generation.  We’re always seeking innovative and imaginative ways to build an effective health and safety culture: one that will protect people and save more lives. You could be part of it.

Diverse perspectives and experiences are critical to our success and we welcome applications from all people from all backgrounds with the experience and skills needed to perform this role. We look forward to receiving your application.

The role

Joining the Offshore Industrial Hygiene Team, you’ll provide specialist input to the investigation, permissioning and inspection of offshore oil and gas installations situated in the UK continental shelf. Covering the assessment and control of physical, chemical and biological health risks, this could include hazards such as hydrogen sulphide, crude oil, drilling muds, asbestos, noise, vibration, radiation and COVID, as well as the provision of first-aid and welfare facilities on offshore installations. At the same time, you will contribute to the development of industry guidance, standards and operational strategy. It's a dynamic and evolving area that's constantly presenting fresh challenges. To help you keep pace, we’ll support your continuing professional development, beginning with enrolment on our Specialist Training Programme (STP).

Your background

We’re looking for a high-calibre specialist who can think strategically, identify underlying risks and issues, and engage at all levels of an organisation. Capable of working under challenge and pressure, you will have the interpersonal skills to build robust relationships with employers and other partners, and to influence organisational change to improve health and safety.  You’ll also be collaborative and well-organised, with the flexibility to work away from home and in a variety of settings.

Holding or working towards Chartered Membership (CMFOH) of the British Occupational Hygiene Society, you’ll have a background in the offshore oil and gas industry, or another industrial sector presenting major hazards. In-depth knowledge and experience of occupational health standards and control of exposure is essential.

Rewards

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.

Please submit your CV, with a suitability statement of up to 1,000 words, outlining relevant experience and explaining how you meet the requirements of the role.
