We are now looking for a Lead Scientist to join our Exposure Assessment and Control (EAC) Team on a permanent, full-time basis. The EAC Team is part of our Science Division’s Health Group which exists to prevent worker ill health caused by exposure to physical, chemical and biological hazards.
Part-time hours are available for this role, for applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

The Role
As a Lead Scientist, you will develop and lead a portfolio of research and scientific support in noise and vibration exposure and control in humans that underpins HSE's guidance and regulatory approach.
Leading work within the wider context of workplace health risk management, you’ll collaborate with colleagues from original idea stage through to the final delivery of outputs, identifying the skills and resources required for the successful delivery of projects.
You’ll encourage colleagues to conduct innovative research that is aligned to the Science Division's business and science strategies, and present findings to HSE, industry stakeholders and scientific peers.
As part of your role, you will be required to undertake some travel for site visits and meetings on an ad hoc basis.
About You
To be considered as a Lead Scientist, you will need:
- Practical experience of leading research or carrying out assessments of human exposure to noise and/or vibration. Experience within the workplace, environmental impact assessment, product safety or other contexts will be considered
- Experience of initiation and development of projects from idea to final delivery including, for example, writing research proposals, business cases and/or applications for funding
- Experience of leading a portfolio of projects/work in the field of human exposure to noise and/or vibration
- An understanding of the principles and practice of the science of human exposure to noise and vibration
- Experience of leading, motivating and managing other project team members
- The ability to work both autonomously as part of a multidisciplinary team, promoting cross team working and effective communication to identify solutions and ensure work can be delivered
- Communication skills, enabling you to manage and collaborate effectively, maintain positive professional working relationships, engage with others and influence at all levels both within HSE and with external collaborators and stakeholders
- A Degree (BSc/MSc) or equivalent in Physics or allied relevant scientific area
- A full driving licence that enables you to drive in the UK is essential. However, HSE is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by another means
