PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Lead Occupational Hygienist to take ownership of the delivery, development, and continuous improvement of our occupational hygiene services. Working directly alongside the Occupational Hygiene Manager, this pivotal role involves both hands-on site assessments and leading the training and professional development of the Occupational hygienists within the team.
You will be responsible for planning and delivering a broad range of occupational hygiene services including air monitoring, noise assessments, hand-arm vibration (HAVS), whole-body vibration (WBV), and other workplace exposure assessments. You’ll also be instrumental in developing internal capabilities through mentoring, coaching, and technical training.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILTIES
Service Delivery
- Conduct on-site occupational hygiene assessments.
- Interpret and report on results with reference to HSE guidelines (e.g., EH40, COSHH, Control of Noise at Work Regulations, etc.)
- Ensure timely and accurate production of technical reports and client deliverables
- Oversee and maintain calibration and readiness of all monitoring equipment
- Review reports from the wider hygiene team prior to them being sent to clients.
Training & Development
- Act as a technical lead and mentor for Junior Occupational Hygienists and Technicians
- Develop and deliver in-house training programs and CPD sessions
- Support professional development, including BOHS qualifications and practical fieldwork training
- Promote best practices and ensure knowledge transfer within the team
Leadership & Strategy
- Assist in shaping the strategic direction of the Occupational Hygiene division
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and internal quality systems
- Support business development with technical input for proposals and client meetings
- Participate in and develop the auditing and quality assurance programme for all hygiene activities
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
- Degree in a science-related field (e.g., Chemistry, Environmental Science, Occupational Hygiene)
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in occupational hygiene, including field-based assessments
- Hold or be working toward Chartered Membership of the BOHS (CMFOH) or equivalent
- BOHS Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (CertOH) or equivalent
- Proven experience in delivering air monitoring, noise, HAVS, and WBV assessments
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationwide
Desirable:
- Experience in delivering internal training or mentoring junior staff
- NEBOSH Certificate or Diploma
- Familiarity with LEV system assessments (BOHS P601 desirable)
- Knowledge of ISO 17025 or similar quality systems
