Chief Editor Annals of Work Exposures and Health

BOHS

With the forthcoming departure of the current Chief Editor of Annals of Work Exposures and Health, Professor Rachael Jones, the Board of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is seeking a new Chief Editor who can further advance the journal’s scientific reputation and growth.

BOHS is a science-led, charitable body and the UK's leading authority dedicated to protecting everyone's right to a healthy working environment. Founded in 1953, it is one of Europe's largest occupational hygiene societies and the only professional society representing qualified occupational hygienists in the UK. With 1600 members across 52 countries, BOHS provides internationally recognized qualifications, scientific conferences, scientific and technical publications, and membership services across diverse fields of worker health.

Annals of Work Exposures and Health is the official journal of BOHS and one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed research journals on hazards and risks to health resulting from work. Published by Oxford University Press, Annals is dedicated to presenting advances in exposure science supporting the recognition, quantification, and control of exposures at work, and epidemiological studies on the effects of work exposures on human health and well-being.

Applications are invited from individuals with an excellent scientific track record in occupational hygiene and its underlying sciences, who have a strong record of publication and substantial experience in managing or conducting research of international quality. Previous experience of contributing to the review of published material is essential, while experience of contributing to editing is desirable.

This appointment provides an opportunity to review the operation of the journal while also considering new approaches to take it to the next stage of its development as a world-leading publication. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to present a vision for the future development of the journal and associated specific proposals for its development. Further details on the current operation of the journal can be discussed with the Chief Editor, Professor Rachael Jones, rmjones@ph.ucla.edu.

The Chief Editor post is remunerated. The remuneration will be dependent on a number of factors, not least the time commitment envisaged for the Chief Editor as part of proposals presented. The current arrangement requires 20-25% full time equivalent effort with professional editorial office support.

The closing date for applications is 9 January 2026.

• It is envisaged that the successful candidate will take up their formal appointment from the beginning of November 2026 (to coincide with planning for Volume 71 Issue 1, due for publication January 2026).

• Prior to this the successful candidate should ideally undertake a transition period of up to three months, shadowing the current Chief Editor. This will take place between August 2026 and October 2026 depending on availability.

Interested candidates should forward the following documents by email to Roz Phillips, Editorial Manager, at roz.phillips@bohs.org.

2. A paper entitled “Match against the Person Specification” for this post, outlining why you are most suitable (maximum 2 sides of A4).
