Metalworking Fluids – An Introduction to the BOHS Guidance for Occupational Hygienists on the Assessment and Control of the Health Risks
This is an introduction to the new BOHS metalworking fluids guidance for occupational hygienists. The focus of the webinar will be on practical, real-world examples such as applications of audit tools.
Speaker Biographies
Gareth Evans (PhD) retired from the HSE Science and Research Centre in 2022 where he was the Principal Scientist managing research into occupational health. He has worked at HSE since 2002 and, before that, at the Medical School at the University of Sheffield. In HSE since 2005, he undertook research into the causation of ill health in machinists exposed to metalworking fluids During this period he worked with the UK Lubricants Association Product Stewardship Group (UKLA-PSG) to develop a good practice guide for managing the quality of MWFs. Since 2022, he has provided technical to the UKLA PSG, and other companies. He is a member of the group that BOHS convened to develop its new guidance for occupational hygienists on working safely with metalworking fluids.
Rachel Powis is the Occupational Hygiene Technical Manager at Envirochem Analytical Laboratories LTD. With approaching ten years in the field, she holds the Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene (CertOH) and is a licentiate of FOH, and committee member. Her expertise spans personal exposure monitoring, COSHH assessments and ergonomics/human factors in a range of industry, including considerable experience in manufacturing settings.
Rachel has an MSc in Air Pollution Management and Control from the University of Birmingham, alongside recent certifications in Ergonomics and Human Factors and Systems Ergonomics from the University of Derby. She is passionate about improving workplace health through practical risk management and continuous improvement.
