Surveyor Competency

As the debate around mandatory accreditation for surveying continues FAAM have recently been delving into the definition of surveyor competency and exploring how those commissioning surveys can identify competent surveyors.

As a minimum surveyors require 6 months experience, a P402 or RSPH Level 3 Surveying qualification. They would then enter or progress within the organisations internal sign-off and professional development procedures (following RG8 for accredited organisations or a similar/equivalent progressional development process for non-accredited organisations) which should involve training and mentoring from senior surveyors/trainers and auditors who pass on their knowledge.

I thought it might be timely to sign-post our readers back to Table A9.5, Appendix 9 of the Second 2021 Edition of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide. Although the table is primarily aimed at survey-related bulk sampling it captures some excellent detailed on the greater depth understanding today’s surveyors should be able to demonstrate. Definitely, worth a reread to check personal competence or the competency of your survey teams accredited or not.
