Midlands

Covering Birmingham and the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Hereford & Worcestershire, the West Midlands region has a strong base of active members.

The organising team is headed up by Leila Kirk as Regional Organiser, who is ably assisted by Adrian Hirst.

On 19th May we held an 'LEV; the real effects of new guidance seminar' held at the Jaguar Visitor Centre, Castle Bromwich. The meeting which was to share the changes that inspectors, testers and suppliers have made and seen since the new guidance HSG258 came out last year, proved to be popular and was well received.

An enormous draw to probably half of the delegates, was the location; Jaguar’s visitor centre which displayed new models at their sleekest and shiniest best. We were treated to round tables in the theatre for the meeting which has a car size (surprise surprise) rotating panel in the front staging. Facilities were classy and teas and coffees provided at the start and halfway through. During the interval we were able to chat with Julian Butler of Shaw City Hire; one of out best sponsors.

The meeting comprised of three presentations; the HSE perspective of the changes a year on, given by James Wheeler, followed by how the services they provide have been tweaked to fit in with the perceptions of the new guidance, given by David Stewart of Zurich Engineering and Dave Harris of Donaldson. Final questions at the end were mostly aimed at David Stewart and James Wheeler, with a bit disagreement between the delegates about the use of the “red sticker”.

Overall, everyone who came said they enjoyed the meeting very much with the majority of delegates considering the HSE talk as the most useful to them but at the same time, everyone picked up practical ideas from the Zurich presentation and from the question time and networking. Three non BOHS members found the design information given by Donaldson very useful. A common comment was disappointment that the HSE model did not come this time and there were no case studies. We shall insist next time!

Note of attendance; we expected a turnout of 59 but in the end 30 turned up. Ten gave us notice of cancellation; mostly due to work pressures and one very kindly sent post meeting apologies.

Next meeting; Vibration workshop on 16 July. The BOHS-WM will be asking for a refundable deposit for attendance at the vibration workshop and for the planned re-visit to Jaguar later this year where places will be limited and are likely to be oversubscribed.

Our meeting held on 17 Feb 2009, discussed key aspects of Skin Absorption and Surveillance of Skin, these are available to download:
