Sam Lord
Sam Lord is a Chartered Occupational Hygienist and Principal Specialist Inspector at the Health and Safety Executive. Sam is currently HSE’s Occupational Hygiene Portfolio Holder for asbestos, metalworking fluids, waste and recycling and non-food production asthmagens, where she provides technical expertise to HSE investigations, proactive inspection and research programmes and civil contingency events.
Sam engages with external stakeholders through membership of the Asbestos Network and Federation of Decontamination Equipment Manufacturers. Her career started 23 years ago when she worked as an asbestos analyst and surveyor at a UKAS accredited consultancy. She is a member of FAAM and a current board member.
Rick Pomeroy
Richard has over 34 years’ experience in the Asbestos industry beginning as a surveyor and analyst and working his way up to the Business Director of a large national asbestos consultancy comprising of 100+ consultants and technicians working from 12 UKAS accredited offices.
In 2003 he joined ABP Associates Limited as MD, a UKAS accredited environmental consultancy providing asbestos survey, air testing, soil and bulk analysis and asbestos training services nationwide. He has project managed numerous largescale contracts relating to housing, retail, the MOD, the BBC, blue-chip and private companies, utilities and the rail industry. During his career, Richard has delivered asbestos-related training/projects throughout the UK and in France, Belgium, Holland, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe and Gibraltar.
Richard has also been involved in expert witness work and has been a regular speaker at conferences for organisations including the RICS, BOHS and HSE Roadshows.
Jan Templeman
educated in analytical chemistry and occupational hygiene. 1970 -2015 working at TNO Research Institute in several positions and as senior expert. In 1973 asbestos became an important item. Since then we work together with HSL on several work items (Garry Burdett) and IOM (Laurie Davies, now HSE).

Andrey Korchevsky
Dr Korchevskiy is a certified toxicologist (DABT), certified industrial hygienist (CIH), and is the Director of Research and Development at C&IH. Dr Korchevskiy holds separate Ph.D. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Biology (with specialization in Occupational and Community Hygiene).
He is a full member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT). His areas of expertise include risk assessment and risk management, toxicological evaluation of occupational and environmental exposure, statistical research and mathematical modeling, asbestos and other fibrous minerals exposure and risk assessment, and other areas of toxicology and industrial hygiene. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on risk assessment, toxicological modeling, and mathematics (including papers featured by “Inhalation Toxicology” and “The Journal of Applied Toxicology”), and has developed several innovative models for toxicological assessment of asbestos, nanoparticles, pesticides and other agents.
His expertise also encompasses environmental and occupational health and safety management systems (EMS and OHSMS) including analysis, design, and implementation. Dr Korchevskiy is a recipient of the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA’s) Outstanding Project Team Award (2013), Volunteer Group Service Award (2016, 2018), and Leadership Award (2019). He is also the Chair of the AIHA Standards Advisory Panel (SAP).
Each year since 2013, Dr Korchevskiy has been an arranger and one of the leading speakers for asbestos risk assessment events (PDC and roundtable) at the annual American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exhibition and in 2017 received the AIHA’s Distinguished Lecturer designation. He has also taught professional development courses on risk assessment at conferences and seminars for the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp., and other public and private organizations.
Ann Wylie
Ann Wylie is currently Emerita Professor in the Department of Geology, University of Maryland, College Park. She holds a BA in geology from Wellesley College and a PhD in economic geology with minor concentrations in mineralogy, petrology, structural geology and mining engineering from Columbia University.
Ann joined the faculty of the University of Maryland in 1972 where she has taught courses and directed research in mineralogy, optical mineralogy, physical geology, environmental geology and economic geology. She has held a number of senior leadership positions including Senior Vice President and Provost.
A fellow of the Geological Society of America and a member of the Mineralogical Association of Canada, the Mineralogical Society of America, and ASTM. Ann has published extensively on problems in mineralogy and human health related to talc, amphibole, chrysotile, and the mineralogical characteristics of asbestos generally.
Dan Barrowcliffe
Daniel Barrowcliffe BSc CoC Asbestos.
Daniel has worked for HSE in their laboratory in Buxton for six years as part of the Fibres and Minerals Team. The main part of his work involves carrying out research into the current asbestos exposures of workers in Great Britain.
Prior to that he worked in the asbestos consultancy industry as an analyst and surveyor. He studied Chemistry at Manchester University.
Laurie Davies
Laurie Davies Technical Team Lead – Fibres and Minerals, Health and Safety Executive, Buxton UK
Laurie Davies is an internationally recognised specialist in fibre/asbestos sampling, analysis and measurement. He has authored numerous reports and papers, relating to the assessment of environmental and workplace asbestos. He has worked extensively on international specialist committees dealing with asbestos and is currently a member of International Standards Organisation (ISO) working groups ISO TC146/SC6 WG 4 and 6 and ISO TC146/SC3 WG1.
He is currently the chair of HSE's Fibre Proficiency Testing Steering Committee and a member of HSE’s Committee of Fibre Measurement and its working group 2.
Laurie has been involved in the development of various methods and strategies for asbestos monitoring; ranging from the contamination of pharmaceutical drugs to the assessment of asbestos-contaminated land and releases from waste sites. He is also a Lead Technical Assessor for the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), assessing analytical asbestos laboratories and inspection bodies.
Adam Binney
Adam Binney is Head of Safety and Sustainable Development for the Group Property Directorate of Network Rail (NR), in his time with the company has spearheaded the overall strategic direction for the business unit to enable compliance with CAR, as well as played a pivotal role in the NR approach to overall compliance.
The first point of contact for ORR and HSE, Adam provides expert advice on S&SD to stakeholders across the business, ensuring that all organisational objectives are met and achieved.
Adam lives in Exeter, Devon with his wife and two girls, and is keen on football, music and food!
Paul Lyons
Since leaving University nearly 20 years ago Paul has worked within every aspect of the asbestos consultancy industry, both client and consultant side, including surveying, analytical, project management, consultancy and compliance.
Paul has been CoCA for 17 years and holds the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) P407 Module – Duty holders responsibility. In addition, he's a member level of the BOHS Faculty of Asbestos Assessment and Management (FAAM).
Paul has spent the past five years at The University of Manchester managing asbestos abatement projects and undertaking the role of Assistant Compliance Manager within the Directorate of Estates & Facilities.
Tony Reilly
Tony is Deputy Asbestos Safety Manager at The Manchester Metropolitan University
After working as an asbestos consultant for a number of years Tony is currently employed client-side in the education sector.
Alan Willoughby
Alan’s career started in the construction industry in 1986 but it wasn’t until he joined the asbestos industry in 2007 that he realized that asbestos was still being used in construction throughout most of his early career.
The construction industry is recognized as one of the more hazardous industry’s and risk management is part of daily life. Much of Alan’s career within the asbestos industry has been spent assisting Duty Holders with managing the risk from asbestos within their building portfolio.
A desire to improve the industry has led Alan to become involved with a number of organizations with similar aims. In the past, this included being a board member of UKATA. More recently being part of the foundation and a current member of the management committee of National Organisation of Asbestos Consultants (NORAC) and part of the ALC subgroups for the Duty to Manage and Analysts and Surveyors.
Alan’s professional credentials include attaining the certificate of competence and joining FAAM at member level.
Andrew Kingscott
Andrew is a Principal Inspector within the Building Safety Regulator – focusing on investigations sanctions and enforcement in the new regulatory regime.
Until recently Andrew had been leading HSE’s Public Administration Education & Volunteers Sector - (PAEV). PAEV lead on Engagement and Policy in respect of Central and Local Government, Education at all levels and Voluntary work across all sectors.
The PAEV team provide direction, advice and support to HSE’s operational teams in respect of standards and compliance with health and safety legislation in the areas for which the sector lead on. The teamwork with industry stakeholders, intermediaries and duty holders to promote and develop improved benchmarks, an improved understanding of compliance and more effective control of key risks. This work included involvement in the development of the revised guidance for Schools and Colleges for managing asbestos and led the inspection programme to assess compliance with the duty to manage in school settings.
Andrew joined HSE in 1990 and has spent much of his career securing improved standards, inspecting premises and investigating accidents across a wide range of industries including agriculture, asbestos removal, construction, general manufacturing and services. Promoted to Principal Inspector in 2007 he has led HSE operational teams focussing on construction, and general industries in the South West of England.
Colette Willoughby
A highly qualified health and safety professional, Colette has an MA in Health and Safety Law and Environmental Law; and holds the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.
Colette is BOHS’ Principal Examiner (Asbestos), and holds the BOHS Certificate of Operational Competence in Asbestos. She sits on the board of BOHS’ Faculty of Asbestos Assessment and Management (FAAM), the association for asbestos professionals. She also sits on BOHS’ board of examiners for the Certificate of Competence in Asbestos, and as such is responsible for advising on the technical content of all BOHS asbestos-related exams. A technical assessor for UKAS, for both Testing Organisations and Inspection Bodies; Colette is also Chair of the National Organisation of Asbestos Consultants (NORAC).
Colette’s career in the asbestos industry began in 1982: she has experience in all aspects of asbestos control, management, training and legal compliance, in addition to providing expert witness advice for both civil litigation and criminal prosecutions. Colette is also the Managing Director of Asbestos Compliance Limited.
Ben Angell-James

Ben has been involved with asbestos throughout a varied career. Week one with Inspectorate Casella in 1993 was a Preliminary Certificate in Asbestos Fibres from Bill Sanderson. After 10 years in London: Air Testing, Bulk Analysis, Surveying, Project Managing, Training and setting up new UKAS Laboratories, it was time to escape to the country: new disciplines, new clients; same challenges.
A sojourn on the other side with senior positions for an environmental software business, a national Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor and then an H&S Directorship for a large multidiscipline contracting business before a return to consultancy. Those same principles learnt in that first week of training have not changed: a commitment to quality, continuous learning, betterment and ensuring the safety of persons that may be placed at risk.
Jeff Ruddle
Jeff Ruddle UKAS Strategic Development Director.
Jeff has been involved in quality management systems almost since he graduated from Sheffield University. He assisted his previous employers in setting up and operating management systems to meet the requirements of, amongst other standards, ISO/IEC 17025.
In 2005 Jeff joined the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), as an assessor in the Chemistry team, over the last 14 years Jeff has risen through the ranks at UKAS holding five different roles at UKAS at Senior Management and Executive Level, including 7 years as Operations Director.
In his current role of Strategic Development Director Jeff has overall responsibility for devising, implementing and tracking UKAS’s strategy along with overseeing several strategic projects which are aimed at improving UKAS’s service to our customers and stakeholders and ultimately provide greater value to holding UKAS Accreditation.
Sara Mason
With a 34-year career in asbestos abatement, latterly at ABP Associates Ltd, Sara's Keen that the next generation of asbestos analysts and surveyors are highly trained and skilled for the next challenges they will face because of the legacy of asbestos use in the UK.
There is still plenty of work to do! The FAAM Asbestos 2020 conference is an opportunity for all levels of an organisation to access the latest science and technical updates.
Martin Stear
Martin Stear BSc DipOH FFOH MFAAM.
Martin is a graduate chemist and a fully qualified occupational hygienist, with over 30 years’ experience. He spent 10 years in consultancy, gaining extensive experience of measurement and assessment, before joining HSE in 1993.
As a Principal Specialist Inspector, he headed the Organic Chemicals and Asbestos section, developing national risk management strategies aimed at reducing risks to health in various industry sectors. With regards to asbestos he provided technical expertise to all parts of HSE, other government departments and ministers, as well as sitting on various expert committees. He provided expertise to the development of legislation and authored various guidance documents.
Martin left HSE in 2004 to set up a small independent consultancy, advising companies on all aspects of asbestos and acts as an expert with regards to criminal prosecutions, civil litigation and personal injury claims. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene within BOHS (the British Occupational Hygiene Society) and current Registrar of the Faculty of Asbestos Assessment and Management (FAAM).
Yvonne Waterman
Dr Yvonne Waterman is the owner of Waterman Legal Consultancy in the Netherlands, an international legal practice that specialises in all asbestos-related (liability) matters.
She is also the founder and president of the European Asbestos Forum Foundation, well-known for its international asbestos conferences for all asbestos professionals and global network, and the president of the Dutch foundation Expertise Center for Asbestos & Fibres.
An experienced speaker at international conferences, Yvonne packs a full audience with thought-provoking presentations on frontier topics. You may also find her editing legal journals or teaching Dutch lawyers the fine points of employers' liability law. In her spare time, she loves to walk in the woods with her Dobermann.
