South West and South Wales Biological Monitoring

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Hazardous substances can enter the body by inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion. Personal air monitoring is a common way to measure exposure to an airborne substance however this does not tell you how much of the substance has actually entered the body. In particular it does not measure how much has entered the body through the skin or by ingestion. Biological monitoring can be a useful procedure for assessing the degree of exposure and the efficacy of control measures including respiratory protective equipment

This meeting describes what biological monitoring is and how it can be used as a tool for exposure assessment or part of health surveillance using examples of workplace case studies
