Certificate of Competence in an Individual Subject

This examination is in two parts - Part 1 (a written examination) and Part 2 (an oral examination) and is aimed at establishing competence in the individual subject area.

The following subjects are available under this scheme, with links to Guidance for candidates where available (these are currently being revised and will be added as and when the updates are completed):

M102 Measurement of Hazardous Substances (including Risk Assessment)
M103 Control of Hazardous Substances
M104 Noise and an Introduction to Vibration
M203 Ergonomics Essentials (including Manual Handling and DSE)
M302 Measurement and Assessment of Noise in the Workplace
M304 COSHH
S301 Asbestos and Other Fibres 

The Part 1 examination is exactly the same as that described in the Occupational Hygiene modules.

The Part 2 examination involves an oral examination of approximately 45 minutes’ duration supported by submission of written work in the subject area. Candidates will be requested to submit a report which demonstrates their practical competence in the subject and which should be based on practical work in the subject.  The oral examinations take place at the Secretariat in Derby, usually during the first week of March, June, September and December each year.

The fee for this examination is payable in two instalments:

1. Initial payment - £75 to accompany the application form and report. This amount covers the initial processing of  the report and a second reading if necessary. If the report continues to be unacceptable after two readings, a further payment of £75 will be required for the third/fourth readings.

If the report continues to be unacceptable after this time, a completely new application must be submitted with the appropriate fee.

2. Once the application and report have been accepted, the balance of £200 must be received before the candidate's name can be entered on the list for the next set of oral examinations.
