Structure
BOHS was formed in 1953, merged in April 2003 with the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists (BIOH), and is by far the biggest hygiene society in Europe. Our Faculty of Occupational Hygiene plays a vital role in developing and maintaining the professional standards of hygienists, and is recognised internationally as a major professional examination and qualification body.
BOHS is a founding member of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (
IOHA) which provides an international voice for the occupational hygiene profession. We are also an integral member of the Professional Organisations in Occupational Safety and Health (
POOSH) grouping, which works towards common aims through joint initiatives and reciprocal support, and we have strong alliances with other health and safety organisations, the HSE, trade unions and business.
The head
We are a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation which is managed by a board of directors, known as the Council. The Faculty of Occupational Hygiene is run by the Faculty Board and reports to Council through its Registrar.
Committees and sub-committees – conference, CPD, membership, standards & publications, education, examinations – oversee the running of many of the day-to-day activities and services.
The heart
The BOHS Office is in Derby, providing a central location and excellent facilities for Council, Faculty Board and committee meetings, as well as examinations. The Office provides all the necessary administrative, accounting, marketing and secretarial back-up to the Society and Faculty, and is the
contact point for our members and other users of our services.
The limbs
We have a regional network covering the whole of the UK, and a range of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) providing local and specialist contact points, information and services.
