LEV Guidance

HSE Guidance

In May 2008, HSE published a new, comprehensive guide on Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) for designers, installers and examiners, accompanied by free leaflets for employers and employees and the launch of a new LEV website.

HSG258 'Controlling airborne contaminants at work: A guide to local exhaust ventilation (LEV)' (ISBN 978 0 7176 6298 2), replaces HSG37 and HSG54. It describes the principles and good practice of deciding on, designing, commissioning and testing LEV and can be obtained from HSE Books (Telephone 01787 881165) or http://www.hsebooks.com/Books/.

Both accompanying free leaflets are available to download here: 'Clearing the air: A simple guide to buying and using local exhaust ventilation (LEV)', which is aimed at employers, and the pocket guide 'Time to clear the air! A workers' pocket guide to local exhaust ventilation (LEV)'. [Please note that, due to high resolution images, these may take some time to load onto your screen, depending on the speed of your internet connection.]

Visit the new HSE LEV website at: www.hse.gov.uk/lev.

BOHS LEV qualifications guidance

The new HSE LEV guidance, HSG258, refers to both of our LEV qualifications - 'P601 Initial Appraisal and Thorough Examination and Testing of Local Exhaust Systems' and 'P602 Basic Design Principles of Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems'

P601 is useful for any technician who actually tests ventilation systems within industry and in public sector buildings, and P602 is about basic design, and is therefore relevant for company engineers and managers who design their own systems. We have produced a flyer for members to use with clients or within their own organisations, which can be downloaded here:
