    Inhaled Particles X is
organised by BOHS in conjunction with
    The Aerosol Society

Publication of the Inhaled Particles X Proceedings

We will publish the fully peer-reviewed proceedings of Inhaled Particles X in an open-access online journal, the Journal of Physics Conference Series (JPCS), published by IOP.  This page summarises what is expected from IPX contributors and guides you through the process of preparing and submitting your paper. It is accompanied by JPCS files to download, below, which provide detailed formatting instructions, templates, and a copyright transfer form.

    Summary of JPCS guidelines

What should an IPX conference paper look like?
Authors of Conference presentations are encouraged to submit full papers for publication in the Proceedings within the Journal of Physics Conference Series (JPCS). There is no upper limit on the length of a full paper, but we suggest that you aim at producing no more than ten pages of written text (including embedded Figures and Tables). Additional data and supporting material can also be published with no page limit; see the Multimedia guidelines in the JPCS  files above for details.

If you are not in a position to submit a full paper you may opt instead for publishing an extended abstract. The minimum suggested length of an IPX extended abstract is four pages of text (including embedded Figures and Tables). One-page abstracts are not acceptable in lieu of papers.

All full papers and extended abstracts will be fully digitally cross-referenced for citation, searching and abstracting purposes; follow the JPCS link above and take a look at one of their recent conference proceedings to see what the finished product will be like.

Does publishing in the IPX Conference Proceedings prevent me from later publishing my work in a prestigious journal?

No. The Copyright Transfer Form for the JCPS specifically allows authors permission to publish a re-written and extended version of their conference paper elsewhere.

How should I prepare my manuscript?
Use the Word template file for A4 or US letter-sized paper, from the JPCS file links above, as you prefer. There are detailed instructions on layout and formatting in the Example Word Document, also included in the JPCS file links above; please read these instructions very carefully and follow them exactly. In particular, note that References must be included as a numbered list (in order of citation) at the end of the article, and referred to by number. If your cited references are not correctly formatted, it will not be possible for the JPCS to produce a fully cross-referenced list to accompany your paper.
Please note – there will be no copy editing of submitted papers so the quality of the end result is in your hands. Papers may be rejected if they are not written in adequate English, or incorrectly formatted. Please use the JPCS templates!

How should I submit my manuscript?
Your IPX conference paper should be uploaded as a Word or rtf file (not a pdf! Your files will be converted to pdf during uploading) through the Annals of Occupational Hygiene Manuscript Central site at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/annhyg. Your ‘Author Account’ will have already been created at the proposal stage and your 'User ID' will be your email address.  You will be submitting your IPX conference paper as a Revision of your original IPX submission, which you should see listed in your 'Author Centre' when you log in. In addition to your new main document (IPX conference paper), please also upload the JPCS Copyright Transfer form (downloaded from the above JPCS files), which you should print out, sign, and scan so that you can include it as an attachment to your submission. Although your paper should have the Figures embedded within it, please also upload an additional copy of each Figure as a separate file so that we can be sure to resolve any problems during publishing. The additional Fibures should be either Word files or standard image formats (jpg, tiff, gif). If you have any difficulty following the submission process please contact Claire Creed at the email address given below.

When should I submit my manuscript?
As all IPX conference papers will be peer-reviewed, we require papers to be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than 30th June 2008. Papers will be sent for initial peer review as soon as they are received and you should receive the comments from reviewers before the conference. Draft papers will be distributed at the conference to delegates, so writing your paper early will make sure that it is in near-final form at this stage. Obviously the earlier your paper is submitted, the more time you will have to revise and resubmit.

Will I have the opportunity to make any final changes after the conference?
We would like authors to have the opportunity to make final changes to their manuscript following discussion at the conference itself, and indeed, your paper’s reviewers may ask for additional changes to be made following the conference. The deadline for making these final changes will be 31st October 2008, following which your manuscript file will be exported from Manuscript Central to IOP for preparation of the JPCS IPX Proceedings. Publication will take between 8 and 12 weeks.
