Fibres

There have been numerous events over the years based on the general interest in Asbestos. This is an area which is of great importance and one where the law and guidance is changing so significantly over relatively short timescales – probably far more than in any other aspect of health and safety in the UK.

The events calendar on this website will be updated as and when further Asbestos related seminars are scheduled and the past events section of this calendar includes the presentations from previously held events on this topic.

Asbestos is an important topic to BOHS as the provider of the ‘S301 Asbestos and other fibres’ Occupational Hygiene Module and the ‘P401–P405’ series of Asbestos Proficiency Modules which are now industry-standard training requirements for analysts and surveyors in this field. The Society is also the instigator of ABICS (the Asbestos Building Inspectors Certification Scheme), the first individual certification scheme for surveyors.

The interest of the Fibres Topic Group extends, however, to fibres of other materials. An Open Technical Seminar entitled “Machine made fibres” was held in Sheffield in January 2007 and focused on some of the new epidemiology information, applications and workplace controls associated with the many new fibrous materials that are now being developed and applied commercially. The presentations from this can also be found in the past events section of the events calendar.

The Technical Topic Leader for Fibres is Neil Peacock. He can be contacted by e-mail on: fibres@bohs.org
