Occupational hygiene is about the prevention of ill-health from work, through recognising, evaluating and controlling the risks. Some production processes create uncommon airborne dusts, and the current issue of BOHS's journal, Annals of Occupational Hygiene, has a paper on measurement of airborne silicon carbide. In unusual workplaces and in regular ones alike, occupational hygienists are trained to recognise and evaluate chemical, physical and biological health risks, and can suggest cost-effective ways of eliminating or controlling risks.
