How to Apply: Course Providers and Practical Assessors

Course Providers

Course Providers wishing to apply for approval to run courses leading to BOHS Faculty examinations must do so by completing an application form. Full details are set out in the Terms and Conditions which we recommend prospective applicants refer to in the first instance.

In summary, applications must provide the following:

  • information on the structure and history of the company;
  • details of the internal quality assurance scheme;
  • details of any training courses currently provided/run
  • details of course(s) for which approval status is being sought;
  • details (names, qualifications etc) of potential tutors
  • details of training and practical facilities
  • a statement that, if accepted, they agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions.

Once registered, Course Providers who do not run any BOHS courses/exams during a calendar year will be removed from the Registered list and will be required to reapply in full if they wish to run any courses/exams in the future.

Registered Course Providers are responsible for ensuring that all course tutors are appropriately qualified in the relevant subject.

From 1 January 2011, there is an application fee of £400 and an annual registration fee of £250.

Practical Assessors

Individuals wishing to register as a Practical Assessor to carry out the practical assessment element of any Proficiency Module examination must first attend a Practical Assessor Training Day, held at the BOHS Head Office in Derby, for which there is an Initial Registration and Training fee of £195. To find out the next scheduled Training Day, contact melanie.chapman@bohs.org.

Individuals must also be able to provide proof of appropriate qualifications and experience, which are listed in the table below; individuals can be registered as an Assessor for more than one Module.

Once registered, Practical Assessors will be audited by a BOHS auditor on a rolling two to three year schedule, and can be removed from the register should they receive an unacceptable audit following a written warning. Practical Assessors will also be automatically removed from the register if they do not carry out a practical assessment within an 18 month period. Practical Assessors who have been removed from the register and want to reapply are required to re-do the Practical Assessor training and therefore will incur the full Initial Registration and Training fee.

From January 2011, all registered Practical Assessors will be subject to an Annual Registration fee of £100 + £75 levy if registered for three or more Modules.

Full details are set out in the Requirements for Participation which we recommend prospective applicants refer to in the first instance.
