Certificate of Competence in an Individual Subject

The Certificate of Competence [CoC] in an Individual Subject is for candidates wanting to establish their competence in a specific field, and follows on from successful completion of the appropriate Occupational Hygiene Module. This is an oral examination, supported by submission of a written report, which is held at the BOHS Head Office in Derby, usually four times a year in March, June, September and December.

The Certificate of Competence oral examinations are due to be held week commencing 11 March 2013, 3 June 2013, 2 September 2013 and 2 December 2013.

Successful candidates are awarded the ‘Certificate of Competence in [Module subject]’ and are entitled to use ‘CoC - [Module subject]’ after their names.

Subject areas

Those who have passed one of our Occupational Hygiene Modules are eligible to sit the CoC examination in that subject.

The Coc in Legionella can be taken by candidates who have passed P901, P903 and P904 [or previously P902 instead of P903 and P904].

The CoC in Asbestos and Other Fibres can be taken by candidates holding the five Asbestos Proficiency Modules, P401 to P405, which together are deemed equivalent to the Occupational Hygiene Module S301.

In all cases, candidates are required to submit a report which demonstrates their practical competence in the subject, and then sit an oral examination of approximately 60 minutes’ duration. The oral exams are usually held four times a year, at the BOHS Head Office, in March, June, September and December.
