Examinations

The BOHS Faculty of Occupational Hygiene offers a range of UK and international qualifications in occupational hygiene and related subjects.  These include stand-alone modules covering general principles and practical applications at foundation (introductory) and intermediate (technician) levels, through to BOHS’s own professional level Certificate and Diploma qualifications.

Modular foundation and intermediate level qualifications

The Occupational Hygiene Modules are aimed at those who want to gain a qualification in a particular topic of occupational hygiene to demonstrate technical expertise in that area or, grouped together, to gain exemption from the Faculty’s professional level Certificate Core examination. More

The International Occupational Hygiene Modules are based on the Occupational Hygiene Modules, without specific reference to UK or other legislation. More

The Proficiency Modules cover both theory and practical training in a specific subject, and are aimed at those needing to demonstrate a level of proficiency to carry out the area of work covered by the Module. More

All of these Module examinations are normally taken at the end of training courses run by independent Course Providers who are registered with BOHS.  There is no pre-requisite qualification specified for any of the courses and examinations, but some basic relevant knowledge and practical experience is recommended.  Bookings are made directly with the Course Providers - click on the 'Book on a Module course/exam' box at the bottom of the page.

Professional qualifications

The Certificate of Competence in an Individual Subject is for candidates wanting to establish their competence in a specific field, and follows on from successful completion of one of the Occupational Hygiene Modules. This is an oral examination, supported by submission of a written report, which is held at the BOHS Head Office in Derby.  More

The Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene is the entry level qualification required to join the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene as a Licentiate, and demonstrates knowledge and competence in the broad principles and practice of occupational hygiene. This is a two-part, written and oral, examination held at the BOHS Office.  More

The Diploma of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene is the highest professional occupational hygiene qualification.  Candidates must already hold the Certificate of Operational Competence, and be able to demonstrate five years’ experience in the field of occupational hygiene.  Award of the Diploma qualifies the holder to become a Member of the Faculty, and demonstrates knowledge of, and competence in, assessment of health hazards and the extent of risk in various workplace circumstances, and an ability to advise  on suitable control procedures.  This is also a two-part, written and oral, examination held at BOHS.
