BOHS Free Northern Ireland Regional Meeting – Statistics for Hygienists

14 September 2018

Time: 14.00 - 16.00

Venue:  Newark Room in the Lanyon Building, Main Site, Queen’s University Belfast (close to where IS is marked on the attached campus map).

Programme:  Statistics for Hygienists, Kelvin Williams

This is a presentation on the use of statistics to evaluate exposure to chemical substances, to help make decisions about compliance or non-compliance with exposure limits. It shows how to actually do the necessary calculations to determine compliance or non-compliance. It's maybe more mathematical than is usual in an occupational hygiene presentation, but most hygienists with a science/engineering/maths background should be able to follow it. It focusses on the approach of the sampling strategy developed jointly by the British and Dutch occupational hygiene societies (the BOHS and the NVvA). This strategy was published in 2011, and is freely available on the websites of the BOHS, BSOH (the Belgian society for occupational hygiene) and the NVvA (the Dutch society).

The degree of variation in occupational hygiene monitoring data can be very high, we must therefore be extremely cautious in drawing conclusions from only a few samples. This poses a problem in the case of consultants carrying out “one day” surveys - this will be addressed in the presentation.

The recently published NEN-EN689 strategy guide for testing compliance with limits will be discussed.

BOHS Free South Wales and the South West Regional Meeting – The Importance of Competence in Developing Occupational Hygienists (President Elect)

18 September 2018

Time: 16.30 – 18.30

Venue:  Government Buildings, Phase 1, Ty Glas, Llanishen, Cardiff, CF14 5SH

Speaker:  John Dobbie-President Elect

Occupational Hygiene is a scientific and technical profession that needs appropriately qualified and competent individuals. Competency, all too often, is narrowly interpreted as possessing a defined technical qualification, whereas it really should cover much more – taking into account behaviours, communication and leaderships skills. Ethics & quality are factors that also need to be built into the overall competency framework as well as a successful delivery focus. This talk will hopefully allow an informed discussion around the subject and additionally look at ways we can instil these concepts into the development of all our occupational hygienists.

Location details:  Map can be found here (Note: there is no on- site parking so please park on the road outside the site).
